5th Piece of Work

This is a series of 4 pantone postacrds that we did as an assignment last year.

The idea of his assignment was to ceate 4 postcards using only one colour (and black) for each card. The colours were blue, brown, orange and yellow and they were to promote 'new' colours brought out by Pantone.

Elements and Principals present in this design:
Point: I have used some points/dots in this design to make up the circles you see in each postcard.
Tone: There are many different light and dark tones in each postcard as you can see.
Letterform: I have used a san serif and a scriptic font for each postcard.
Colour: As i mentioned before, only one colour was to be used for each postcard.
Contrast: The colours are deffinately the contrasted element in these designs - from light to dark tones.
Hiearchy: The photos are more dominant than the text.
Pattern: the dots are the pattern.
Proportion: The figures in the blue and yellow are placed more to the left, whereas the figures in the orange and brown are placed in the middle of each design.

Things I would change: In the blue and orange postcards, I've made the dotted circles blue and white, and orange and white. For the blue one I would change it by making the cirle just blue or just white, not a mix. Same with the orange, i'd xchange the dots to white.

4th Piece of work

This is a design that I created 2 years ago for my year 12 design major. It is a t-shirt design for a fictitious brand called 'mimic', complete with price tags. I chose the subject first as I thought it would be fun to dress my brother up as a mime artist. I then called it 'mimic' as it relates directly to the job of a mime artist: to mimic people. I wanted the design to be fun and humourous.

I took the images into Photoshop and played around with the brighness and contrast to make it very contrasted. For a bit of colour I painted his lips red.

To give you a bit of an idea of the compostion of the pictures on the t-shirt; the 3 mimes down the bottom were used on the front of the t-shirt, the small faces were used on the sleeve and the text was put vertically on the back of the t-shirt down one side.

The elements & principals of this design:
Tone: The tone of the skin varies as it can be quite dark and then quite light depending where the light hits it.
Texture: The texture of the type font has a rough grungey look about it.
Colour:Minimal colour has been used, the only actual colour is red.
Contrast: As i said before I purposely turned up the contrast in this design to give it a bold, interesting feel.
Hierarchy & scale: Some of the figures are bigger than others. The text is quite large which means that is dominating.

3rd piece of work

This is an Art Deco poster that I designed last year as one of our assignments.

I found a picture of this 1930s 'flapper' girl and brought the photo into Illustrator and used the Live Trace tool to create this cool effect. In my research I found that Art Deco pieces used a lot of vibrant bold colours in their designs. They also use a lot of geometric shapes which i mimicked in my design.

Elements and Principals used in this design include:
Line: I used both straight sharp lines and soft curved lines
Shape: I've used circles, triangles and a rectangle.
Tone: The different tones of the girl's skin and clothes
Texture: The texure of the girl's flapper dress and the texure of her hair.
Letterform: I've used 2 different fonts to convey the message.
Colour: There are both greyscale aspects and full colour.
Contrast: The light and dark aspects of the girl, the contrast between the girl being greyscale and the rest of the poster being full bright colours.
Hierarchy:
The girl is definately the 1st this you see in this poster.
Pattern: The use of the shapes has been repeated.

2nd piece of work

I created these postcards and poster last year for an assignment called Generation ME. I chose the topic child abuse and this is what i came up with..

I took a few photos of the children next door to me and used the burn tool in Photoshop to create the bruises on them. I wanted the designs to be simple, but send a strong message. I found a few statistics on the internet and used them to add emphasis. I took the picture of the teddy bear as a symbol of neglect as it looks like it's been discarded.

I chose to change the backgrounds to greyscale also to add emphasis that these children's lives are bleak and sad.

I chose a font that looks a bit childish as a way of portraying the kids reaching out for help.

Design elements and principals present in this design are:
Tone: The different tones of the bruises on their skin
Texture: There are many different textures in this design. These include the grass, the leaves behind them, the fur of their teddy bears, their hair, the concrete. Also the wood that the bear is laying on in the smaller postcard.
Colour: As i said before i made the backgrounds grayscale to empahsise the main focal point of the design which are the 2 boys and the abandoned teddy bear.
Figure-ground: The Boys and the teddy bear deffinately dominate in these images.
Balance: The boys and the teddy are placed exactly in the middle of each design as they are the focal point as i said before.
Heierarchy: The images are more dominant over the text. This is because even without the text you would still understand what the design is about.
